Back to the Long Runs

Haven't done a really long run for what seems like ages. I think the hiking season is over for me, given the snow that has been coming down, so it's time to get back to it.

And this morning the snow was really coming down. I got out and headed to Crescent Road, where I could just barely make out the outline of the Canterra Tower across the river.

Fresh snow everywhere, and a fair amount of traffic running the other way. Even across the river were singles, couple and groups, just visible through the snow. It seemed to get thicker as I chugged along the promenade, and the highrises a couple of blocks away where almost obscured by the snow fall.

No plows had been out save for a single swipe along the promenade. It stuck to the front of my running tights and windbreaker, and my gloves were icing up. But it was lovely to run in. The snow wasn't so deep to make running in it difficult, but there was lots to cushion each step.

I plodded along, passing 14th Street and Crowchild, and heading into the Lawrey Gardens Natural Area. Crossing the tracks to the path below Spruce Cliff, the snow started to let up a little, and about five minutes from the track crossing at Edworthy, it stopped.

On the way back toward the downtown, the paths started to get a little slushy. And I felt great. I wasn't setting any speed records. In fact a couple of intervals I was below 10 kph. The damn slush, though - I started getting wet feet from splashing myself as I ran along.

Coming up to 10th Street, I noticed the GPS had died. I was sure I had it plugged in and charged, but apparently not. I had been guessing that I would probably get to my end point about 1:50, so I'll go with that.

Today's run:
Distance: 15.8 km. Time: 1:38:00. Average speed: 9.7 kph. (6:12 min/km)
Rest distance: 1.20 km. Rest time: 11:00.
Total distance: 17.00 km. Total time: 1:50:00.

Shoes: New Balance 1061.

Weather: Light snow and -1C at the start; cloudy and 0C at the end.
